Recorder, SBC should awake from dead

Email Print
Clock 3. November 2008 by Gary Howell, Norwood
I understand somewhat the reticence on the church side to co-mingle politics and the gospel. But it is one thing to overtly align with and crusade for one or the other political party and quite another to hide behind the squirmy enjoiner that God is love and to say nothing while 9-month-old babies are butchered.

So far as I’m concerned after reading the article “Jesus’ politics seminar talks issues, not parties” (Oct. 25) the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and the Biblical Recorder are not “standing in the gap” but are hiding in the malaise; there is no ambiguity in the reality of this drastic situation.

Nathan Finn’s remarks, attitude and comportment bring to mind the Laodicea odyssey described in Revelation 3: gutless, pandering, pussy footing, tepid. Just what from hell would it take to stimulate outrage from the good, but dead, folks at the Biblical Recorder and SBC?

It's interesting that the outrage of Jesus was not against the "sinners" but the people of his own religion who strived to keep the letter of the law for their own selfish intent and missed the intent of the law entirely!

Gary, read your Bible and then we'll talk. Love is not "pandering, tepid, gutless" or even the inappropriate phrase you used in your comment. Love is costly, daring, sacrificial and hot! Maybe your comments are just what we need - because they have stimulated my outrage.

Gary, there is a fine line to walk between taking a strong stand on issues and being too closely aligned and identified with a particular political party. I just hope you recognize there is a balance here. If I preach a sermon against abortion (which I do), I also run the risk of people hearing me as an advocate of Republicans rather than an advocate of the Gospel.

I think all the people you mention are trying hard to find the appropriate balance. They may or may not have found it yet, but have a little grace for those who come to different conclusions than you.
