I am your normal wife, mother, and employee of a NC Baptist institution trying to find and answer the call on her life. I believe that all of us are called to ministry, regardless of our employ. I also believe that the average person doesn’t believe they are called by God. Ministers, teachers, deacons and the like are called, but so are we – ALL of us. I would love to see all of us get about doing whatever it is we were called to do as IF we were called to do it by GOD – because we were.
My daughters – ages 6 and 12 – have been performing heart defib on me for some time now. It actually started with the 12 year old when she accepted Christ. Her heart became so broken for the plight of others that she would cry even at movies where people were treated unfairly. My youngest, in a recent blessing over the evening meal, thanked God for giving His Son to die for our sins so we could live with Him forever. I treasure these little heart-jumping moments. They are unprompted and genuine in every way.
Every year, we ask our beloved daughters what they want for Christmas. This year is no different and although the youngest has provided a long list (of which she adds to during every commercial break), my eldest has nothing on her list. I’ve reminded her several times that we can’t read her mind and she mumbles something about being glad that’s true.
This morning, on my way to take her to school, I received the greatest gift a parent could ask for. In our excessive society where middle schoolers are all about “more”, my beautiful gift from God said, “Mom, there is not a thing I could ask for this Christmas that I don’t already have.” I’m sure I heard the angels sing. My heart swelled and tears jumped to my eyes.
Somehow, someway, she gets it. And as a parent, I couldn’t be more proud.
